Indonesian Manpower Minister Inaugurated 6 DESBUMI in Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara

On 30 August 2016, the Indonesian Minister of Manpower, M. Hanif Dhakiri, inaugurated the Desa Peduli Buruh Migran (Desbumi) in Tegaweti village, Ileape District, East Nusa Tenggara. Desbumi is a local initiative that is driven by  Migrant CARE and Yayasan Kesehatan untuk Semua (YKS) and supported by MAMPU, to provide a road map for migrant workers to work abroad, started from the village.

Desbumi launched in six villages, such as: Tagawiti village, Beutaran Village, Dulitukan Village which are located in Ili Ape District, and Lamatokan Village, Lamawolo Village and Bao Lali Duli Village in the East Iliape district.

In his speech, Hanif Dhakiri expressed the need for active role of the village head in terms of services, protection, and empowerment of migrant workers. To that end, the village head should actively support and encourage data collection, monitoring, and facilitate the villagers who will work, on work and has been returned from working abroad.

Desbumi expected to become a center of services, protection and empowerment of rural communities, which can provide information and data for those who want to work, on working, or after working abroad. Desbumi also expected to be the example for other migrant workers’ villages.

Anis Hidayah, Director of Migrant CARE, explained that previously, Desbumi has been established in Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (6 villages), Wonosobo, Central Java (10 villages), Kebumen, Central Java (2 villages), Cilacap, Central Java (one village), Jember, East Java (2 villages), and Banyuwangi, East Java (6 villages).

During the event, Minister of Manpower was accompanied by acting Regent Peter Manuk, Technical Program Manager of MAMPU Program Enurlaela Hasanah, and also the Director of Migrant CARE Anis Hidayah.
