Konferensi Perempuan Timor – Strengthening Solidarity, Eradicating Poverty

Coinciding with Poverty Eradication Day on October 17th , MAMPU partners held Konferensi Perempuan Timor in Atambua, East Nusa Tenggara. The conference which lasted for two days, was a collaboration amongst MAMPU partners, BaKTI, The National Commission on Anti-Violence against Women (Komnas Perempuan) and Indonesia Women Crisis Center Network (FPL).

The conference was initiated to respond to a distinct border areas issues such as limited access to information and issues related in tackling poverty and women’s issues such as human trafficking.

Willy Lay, Regent of Belu in his speech expressed his appreciation for Konferensi Perempuan Timor, “We appreciate and support Konferensi Perempuan Timor with its main agenda to reduce poverty. This event has a very deep meaning for us. This event has raised our (government) awareness and attention towards women and poverty issues.”

The two-day conference discussed some issues such as Vulnerability of Women Living in Border Areas and in Post-conflict Regions, Women’s Access to Social Protection and Reproductive Health Services, Cultural Tradition, Migration and Violence against Women (Domestic Violence and Trafficking) and Role of Female Parliamentarians in the Gender Sensitive Advocate Regulation. Migrant Care, Provender for Human Rights and Justice (PDHJ) Timor Leste, MAMPU Partners, such as Alternative Education Circle for Women (Institut KAPAL Perempuan), PEKKA, YKS and some members of the Regional People’s Representatives Assembly (DPRD) joined the event as guest speakers in Belu.

Konferensi Perempuan Timor published a declarations which fell into MAMPU’s five thematic areas. This joint-action plan was expected to be submitted in various public forums.

Konferensi Perempuan Timor did not stop there. On October 19th , 2016, Women’s Parliamentary Caucus (KPP) representatives of Belu, TTS and TTU have officially been inaugurated. Representatives of Indonesia Women Crisis Center Network (FPL) handed out the joint declaration document published by Konferensi Perempuan Timor with a high hope for implementing the program. The new inaugurated KPP will provide a forum for female members of parliament to unify voices and enhance their ability in carrying out their job descriptions.

On the occasion, Juliana Makandolo, the Chairman of TTU and TSS KPP also emphasised on the human trafficking and violence against women issues.

“We hope, we can provide solution for women’s issues through Konferensi Perempuan Timor and Women Parliamentary Caucus,” she said.

In line with Juliana, Januaria A.AB, Chairman of Belu Regional People’s Representatives Assembly (DPRD) gave a speech at the inauguration of the KPP. She added, “We come to support and fight for the interests of women in our constituencies.”

With a high spirit, Mercy Piwung, Chairman of NTT KPP added, “I am proud that we all have commitment to fight for women’s right issues.”

KPP invited the entire community to declare war on poverty and violence against children and women. KPP would also give their hand in realising the dreams and hopes for the basic, social and economic rights fulfillment.
