KPI held Swara Sarasvati Award 2016

On October 17th, MAMPU’s partner, The Indonesian Women’s Coalition for Justice and Democracy (KPI) held Swara Svarasvati Award 2016 in Wisma Antara Auditorium, Central Jakarta. Inspired by Saravati’s spirit, the biennial award took “Poor Women’s Access to National Health Insurance” as the theme. It is expected to have an impact on strengthening the role of women in various aspects.

In her speech, the Secretary General of KPI, Dian Kartika said, “This is an appreciation from The Indonesian Women’s Coalition for Justice and Democracy (KPI) for journalists and media companies who have brought women’s rights and health issues in to public’s attention.”

Dian Kartika Sari added, “Poor women face obstacles in accessing information and technical matters for National Health Insurance (JKN) registration.”

After conducting field report and research in several KPI’s working areas, KPI understood that issues on JKN was one of the biggest issues faced by women in poverty. Therefore, JKN becomes Sarasvati’s theme for this year’s award. This national award honored and celebrated media companies and journalists who were making contribution in capturing and reporting women current issues. KPI believed this award could reflect media’s essential role in improving community awareness and pushing the fulfillment of social protections programs in Indonesia, especially JKN.

Entries were accepted from all media platforms. Hesthi Murti of The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI), Ignatius Haryanto, UMN lecturer, Zumrotin KS, the Chairman of Women’s Health Foundation (YKP) and Arswendo Atmowiloto, senior journalist and cultural observer were the juries. They observed and reviewed 1,298 articles published in the last 14 months.

Tempo.co, Radio Republik Indonesia, Harian Terbit, CNN and Net TV won the awards for Online Media, Radio, Printed Media and TV categories.

Mitra Tarigan, the award winner from Tempo expressed her gratitude, “Thank you KPI for the award. We (Tempo) feel honored to receive this award”.

Nadlroh As Sariroh, National Presidium of The Indonesian Women’s Coalition for Justice and Democracy (KPI) hopes through Swara Sarasvati, media companies and journalists will be more committed in raising awareness of women issues and maternal health.
