The Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (MAMPU) held its annual Partners Forum at the Alila Hotel, Jakarta 11-12 July. Over 140 committed women from 23 provinces representing more than 100 partner, sub-partner, and community level organizations gathered to share stories and engage with senior government officials on policy issues.
Aptly titled Women’s Leadership to End Poverty and Gender Equality, issues covered improving access to government services, concerns about the impact of intolerance and radicalism on the voices and rights of women, and lessons from MAMPU’s first four years (2012-2016). Partners and local governments shared their ‘model initiatives’ bringing about improved access by poor women to government services including social protection programs, migration services, employment insurance, cancer screening and improved response for victims of violence.
The forum also heard personal stories of courage, determination and empowerment by grassroots women to have their voices heard and their rights recognised.
BAPPENAS Deputy Minister for Human Development, Society, and Culture Mr Subandi and Director of Family, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, Ms Woro, reiterated the governments support for locally driven solutions that embody gender equality and women’s empowerment. They acknowledged the important contribution of MAMPU civil society partners in the country’s endeavor to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
MAMPU’s Phase II (2017-2020) will focus its efforts to increase the voice and influence of women in policies and services and continue to build the capacity of partner organisations in collective action and advocacy at the local and national levels.
