INFID Expert Meeting: The Role of University and Local Government in Achieving SDGs

On October 4, 2016, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the International NGO Forum on Indonesian Development (INFID), initiated an Expert Meeting in Jakarta to discuss about achieving the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). It was attended by representatives of the Ministries, four Regional Head, member of the House of Representatives, six universities (Rector), Civil Society Organisations and entrepreneurs. MAMPU Program representative also attended and participated in this event as part of efforts in achieving the SDGs.

INFID director, Sugeng Bahagijo, explained that this meeting is very important in building synergy between central and local government programs, as well as the involvement of universities.

Chief of Staff of Presidential Affairs, Teten Masduki, conveyed the importance of collaboration between the parties to achieve the SDGs and urges that CSOs become the motor of development. In addition, Teten also said “The role of local governments and universities is needed to achieve that goal”.

Minister of Manpower, M. Hanif Dakhiri, also said, “Especially for local governments, they should have a policy in terms of development. In particular, improvement of human resources (HR), ie, formal education and vocational education, which is one of the educational system that can address the unemployment problem in the globalisation era.”

Pangkajene Islands Regent, H. Shamsuddin A. Hamid S.E., mentioned various challenges he faced as region head, also innovations and breakthroughs were made, which could be a reference to policy makers in central government.

Bojonegoro Regent, Suyoto explained Bojonegoro’s readiness in implementing SDGs. To achieve it, it requires many parties involvement. “The policy, not only from the government side, but also involves the participation from public, academics, entrepreneurs, and community. This four elements are known as the synergy of four friends,” said Suyoto.

Rector of Hasanuddin University, Dwia Aries Tina Palubuhu, said that this expert meeting is very important. “This meeting inspires local governments to broaden their understanding for their achievement. Synergy, network, and communication remains a challenge to the area’s potential utilisation.”
