The University of Sydney Students Field Visit to MAMPU Partners in South Sulawesi

After conducting a field visit in Jakarta, the University of Sydney students who participated in Sydney South East Asia Centre (SSEAC) program, went to South Sulawesi Province to visit some MAMPU Program Partners on 17 to 22 July 2016.
During the field visit in South Sulawesi, the students were splited up and visited different partners and sub-partners of MAMPU, such as: BaKTI, FPMP, YKPM, Indonesian Women’s Coalition (KPI), KAPAL Perempuan, LMP2EM and Maupe, in four regions; Makassar, Pare-pare, Maros Regency and Pangkajene Islands. They learned about various issues, such as parliament strengthening and “pro-poor and pro-gender” budget, domestic violence, NGO sustainability, community organising and policy advocacy groups.
In Makassar, Michelle, one of the SSEAC participants, learned about organisation’s sustainability strategy through BaKTI, while Bridget learned about Maupe women’s political school, met the City Council and the Health Office in Maros. While Margo and Maddy visited the House of Women Survivors of Violence in Macini Sombala Center of Indonesian Women’s Coalition. And Piyusha, Ciaan and Lies visited Sabutung island in Pangkajene islands to observe School of Women – KAPAL Perempuan activities.
Deputy Director SSEAC – University of Sydney, Dr. Elisabeth Kramer, explained, “After conducting a field visit and interact directly with the community and MAMPU partners in Jakarta and South Sulawesi, students were assigned to make a written report in their respective issues and present them before returning to Australia“.
