Redefining the Independence Day through Women’s Participation

On Wednesday, 17 August 2016, Institute of Alternative Education Circle for Women (KAPAL Perempuan) and its partners, held a commemoration on the 71th Indonesia Independence Day that involved members of the School of Women (Sekolah Perempuan) in Jakarta and Sabutung island, Pangkejene Islands (Pangkep) – South Sulawesi.

In Jakarta, the commemoration was held at the East Jakarta Library and Archives Office. The School of Urban Poor Women of Ciliwung Riverbank and KAPAL Perempuan performed a flag ceremony, followed by reading and sending dozens of letters to the President requesting the abolishment of child marriage. The letter titled “DETERMINATION OF WOMEN”, was read at the ceremony, and mentioned the urge for independence of women: “Abolished child marriages; send the children to school for the sake of women’s quality of life.”

While in the Sabutung island – Pangkep, YKPM and KAPAL Perempuan, which are supported by MAMPU Program, actively participated in the Independence commemoration conducted by the Pangkep Local Government. Sahariah, one member of the Island School of Women’s, read the text of Pancasila in the ceremony. The Island School of Women’s members wore Bugis traditional custom and joined the parade. The activity followed by rowing and boat competition.

School of Women is an activity initiated by KAPAL Perempuan together MAMPU Program that aimed poor rural women to gain access for information.
