The MAMPU Program Shares Insights in the ‘Women Deliver 2019’ Conference

MAMPU Program participated in Women Deliver 2019, the world’s largest conference in the 21st century on gender equality and the health, rights, and wellbeing of girls and women. The conference took place on 3-6 June 2019 in Vancouver, Canada. Three MAMPU Partners attended the event: the KAPAL Perempuan Institute, the Trade Union Rights Centre (TURC), and the East Indonesia Knowledge Exchange (BaKTI) Foundation.

CowaterSogema Inc hosted a session called ‘The Power of the Women’s Movement: A Case Study from Indonesia’, where representatives of the MAMPU Program presented the approach used by MAMPU Partners to overcome issues of gender inequality in Indonesia. First Kate Shanahan, the MAMPU Team Leader, introduced the MAMPU Program. Then, Justin Christina Galatik talked about the journey of KAPAL Perempuan as an organisation engaged in developing women’s critical thinking through their local Women’s Schools. Then Yasinta Sonia Ariesti explained issues facing home-based workers in Indonesia, and how TURC is empowering workers by organising communities and engaging in advocacy to push for regulations to provide protections for homeworkers. Finally, Lusia Palulungan shared BaKTI’s experience in developing the participatory parliament recess, a model that brings Constituent Groups and local parliamentarians together in public consultation, to find solutions to key issues facing women in the community.

More than 6,000 participants, consisting of world leaders, influencers, advocates, academics, activists and journalists participated in this year’s Women Deliver conference. The four-day event was held to accelerate progress for girls and women everywhere, promote world-class solutions, and realise a more equal world.
