On Wednesday, 6 March 2019, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) welcomed women grassroots activists from across Indonesia to the Presidential Palace to commemorate International Women’s Day (IWD) together. Representatives from a number of civil society organisations that are partners of the MAMPU Program participated in the celebration.
Jokowi invited 16 women who are pioneers in their respective fields to take part in the celebration. Four of these women work with KAPAL Perempuan, Migrant Care, and Aisyiyah respectively — organisations supported by the MAMPU program, including: Saraiyah, Chairperson of Women’s School and Member of the Krama Council in Sukadana Village, North Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province; Nurlina, a fisherwoman from Sabangko Island, Pangkajene dan Kepulauan (Pangkep) Regency, South Sulawesi; Jumiatun, a former migrant worker and a representative of the Villages that Care about Migrant Workers (DESBUMI) Program from Dukuhdempok Village, East Java; and Sri Nani, a member of Balai Sakinah ‘Aisyiyah who actively campaigns for women’s rights and reproductive health in Sampiran Village, Cirebon, West Java.
In front of President Jokowi, Saraiyah had the chance to share her experience in handling cases of violence against women in a post-earthquake displacement camp in North Lombok.
Other than Saraiyah, another Women’s School member, Fitri, mentioned the importance for the poor to have access of National Health Insurance for the Contribution Assistance Recipients (JKN-PBI). Women’s School members have done JKN-PBI monitoring in 6 villages in Gresik, North Lombok, East Lombok, Pangkajene Islands, Kupang, and East Jakarta.
