Migrant CARE and Yayasan Kesehatan untuk Semua (YKS), supported by MAMPU, held a seminar titled “The Importance of Safe Migration Information, Trafficking and Modern Slavery” on 14 June 2016. The seminar was held in SMA PGRI Lewoleba, Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara, and attended by 700 students from 15 high schools and vocational around Lembata.

The background of this activity was motivated by the vulnerability of the human rights violations practice in migration, especially among Indonesian Migrant Workers (BMI). Thus, it is important to give comprehensive information for the public, especially students, about safe migration.

From the seminar, it is expected that the students can get information about safe migration, the rights of migrant workers in accordance to migrant workers convention and migratory risks, such as trafficking, modern slavery, and other cases. Additionally, the student can have an understanding of preventive measures from being trapped as victims while seeking work and to be aware of a job offer with high salaries.

The seminar started with welcoming remarks from Mansetus Balawala (YKS Director), Principal of SMA PGRI Lewoleba, deputy of Lembata district and Elizabeth Elson (MAMPU Team Leader).

There were five speakers at the seminar, such as: Melanie Subono (actress and Anti-Modern Slavery ambassador), Dinna Wisnu (Commissioner of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights / AICHR), Cor Sakeng (YKS Lembata), Anis Hidayah (Executive Director of Migrant CARE) and Elizabeth Elson (MAMPU Team Leader).

In the seminar, Melanie Subono delivered materials about the importance of information about safe migration, trafficking and modern slavery for young people. While Dinna Wisnu, conveyed the role of AICHR in preventing trafficking in persons. Elisabeth Elson delivered MAMPU program’s contribution in women empowerment for reducing poverty, and Anis Hidayah about the importance of understanding the rights of migrant workers and safe migration.
